Mosaic , published by Experian, is a socio-demographic classification system covering the whole of the United Kingdom. It is intended to to provide an accurate and comprehensive view of citizens and their needs by describing them in terms of demographics, lifestyle, culture and behaviour.
Mosaic was devised under the direction of Professor Richard Webber, a leading authority on consumer segmentation, using data from a wide range of public and private sources. It is used to enable policy decisions, communications activity, resources strategies and marketing activity across the public and private sectors.
As from the 2021 update of MAST, Mosaic 7 classifies the community represented by each UK postcode into one of 15 groups and 66 types, where group embraces between 3 and 6 types. The group and type structures are the same as Mosaic 6 Public Sector although arranged in a different order, and improvements have been made to the data sources and data visualisation.
Previous versions of Mosaic use different classifications, derived in a similar manner. The version of Mosaic previously used by MAST was Mosaic 6 Public Sector released in 2014, which used a similar but non identical classification also consisting of 15 groups and 66 types. However, there was approximately a 30% overall movement between types at a household level between Mosaic 6 and 7, varying by group and type.

MAST links STATS19 drivers and casualties to Mosaic by using postcodes. This makes it possible to expose the socio-demographic profiles of the communities where they live in the Driver Mosaic and Casualty Mosaic dimensions.
MAST also provides indexed reports, which compare the Mosaic profiles to the underlying population.
